Modern American Glamour has a new address—introducing a new retail and studio experience located in New York City’s iconic Soho neighborhood.

JONATHAN ON THE ATELIER

Soho has always meant the world to me.

My dad used to drive us in from our farm town three hours away and we’d spend all day at the galleries in Soho. He was a fabulous painter, I was a budding potter. The smell of oil paint is my Proustian madeleine.

When I moved to NYC, suddenly the Soho galleries were right there and I was living for it. (Do you remember that guy who was always at the front desk at the Mary Boone Gallery? He was an institution. Whatever happened to him?) Sonnabend, Leo Castelli, Mary Boone…. Oh my god, the Comme Des Garçons brutalist store with the hanging mannequins.

But my favorite destination in Soho was The Broken Kilometer, the Walter De Maria minimalist/conceptual permanent installation on West Broadway between Spring and Broome. I’m not spiritual, but The Broken Kilometer was my temple.

I took studio space at a pottery collective in a dilapidated loft on Mercer Street. My rent was $250 a month for a 10’x10’ space and I was an artiste in Soho and I felt like that was enough. I had made it.

Cut to today: Atelier Adler (across the street from The Broken Kilometer and with fluorescent lights in the pottery studio arranged in rows in an homage to The Broken Kilometer) is a dream come true for moi.
